So, I did some research on what people who like winter do here in Michigan. Of course, it's not like I am going to rush out and do these activities. As most people know, I am not a fan of the winter season. But why not check it out and see what I could be missing.
When I was a young teenager, we had snowmobiles at our cottage in the northern part of the state. And yes, I did participate in that activity. What can I say, I was much younger then. I didn't focus so much on the cold and snow. It was what it was.
Now many people are into racing snowmobiles. I guess that would be fun. But as a spectator sport? People do go and watch other people race snowmobiles. And I mean no offense to those of you who enjoy watching the races. Just not my thing.
Some big snowmobile events are going on in Sault Ste Marie in Michigan's upper peninsula. You can catch some snowmobile races and a parade both.
I didn't know there was such a thing as climbing frozen waterfalls. Yep, at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Who knew. Well, probably lots of people knew. Looks quite interesting...but very cold.
And if that is a little more excitement than you wanted, how about Ice Golfing. It seems there is an annual event in Saint Ignace called the Ice Golf Scramble. You can putt around the frozen Lake Huron with brightly colored balls. Yep, I said that with a straight face and a bit of a smile.
Adults and kids alike love to sled. Bundle up warm in your winter gear and grab those sleds. Below are a few of the top spots for sledding. Sledding is one of the better ideas for winter fun.
Saginaw: Hoyt Park
Bay City: Veterans Memorial Park
Muskegon: Muskegon State Park
Traverse City: Sleeping Bear Dunes
Ypsilanti: Rolling Hills County Park
I was never a big fan of ice skating. I tried it a few times, but my feet were always cold, and honestly, I wasn't very good at skating. Standing by the fire and drinking hot chocolate was the best part. But if, your family enjoys ice skating here are some suggestions for you.
Buhr Park Outdoor Ice Arena-
Winter Sports Park at City of Petoskey
Skating at Royce Park-Escanaba
Campus Martius Park-Detroit Campus Martius Park
I would never even have considered skiing. I would have killed myself or at least broke a few bones. Let's say that I am less than coordinated and leave it at that.
But for those coordinated enough to hit the slopes here are a few of Michigan's top slopes.
Pine Knob Ski Resort Inc. Located in the village of Clarkston, Michigan. Besides the ski slopes, you can also enjoy snowboarding.
Mt Brighton is a popular ski resort in the southeast part of Michigan. Mt Brighton has 25 trails and five lifts.
Boyne Mountain-Located near Boyne City in northern Michigan.
There are lots more places to enjoy winter activities here in Michigan than those I have mentioned. So don't limit yourself to just those few.
I will be sitting right here drinking a large mug of hot chocolate with lots of whipped cream, while the rest of you get out there and engage in all those cold winter sports.
Oh, and if you are interested, my two favorite brands of hot chocolate are Private Selection Salted caramel and Ghirardelli Hot Cocoa Double Chocolate.
There is a lot of things to do, but I hate the cold just like you do. I just think of warm thoughts from November to May.
