Healthy living becomes even more critical if you are a member of the 60+ crowd. And ladies, it's not too late to get started. I will share seven crucial habits to make part of your daily routine.
7 Important Habits
Habit #1
Your diet-Fruits and vegetables should be at the top of your grocery list and include whole grains and low-fat dairy products like cheese and yogurt. Limit processed foods and those with added sugar. But don't be afraid to indulge in your favorite treats occasionally. But aim for healthy eating at least 90% of the time.
Habit #2
Exercise: Start your day with some stretches. Get some exercise each day. Add in a morning and evening walk. And include some lightweight training several times a week. Do some balance exercises. Get your heart rate up and burn some calories. Set a goal of 10,000 daily steps. You will feel good and have more energy. Getting in some exercise is so important. Make sure you make it a top priority.
Habit #3
Getting enough sleep-Many of us discover as we get older that we tend to wake up much earlier than we want to. And many of us wake up several times throughout the night. I have been adjusting the time I go to bed. I make it a little later every night until I find what works best. As we age, we still require about the amount of sleep needed in our 40s and 50s. Establishing a regular sleep routine will assist you in getting your needed rest.
Habit#4
Don't forget to exercise your brain-Just as your body needs exercise to keep it going; the same goes for your brain. Keep your brain active by doing some crossword or sudoku puzzles. Start a weekly card party. Play different card games. How about doing a jigsaw puzzle occasionally? Play some trivia games. Learn something new now and then. Keeping your brain sharp can be fun.
Habit #5
Limit your alcohol intake- That doesn't mean you can't occasionally enjoy a glass of wine. Maybe even a glass a day. But remember that too much alcohol can cause falls, memory loss, high blood pressure, and other issues. Remember everything in moderation. But also keep in mind any medications you may be on.
Habit #6
Stay positive-Staying positive can lead to a longer and, of course, happier life. Don't dwell on the negative stereotypes that abound on getting old. Instead, embrace getting older. We don't just stop enjoying life because we have had a few more birthdays. We should be making the most of every day. Get out, and get moving and grooving!
Habit #7
Use your time well-You may have lots of free time now. Make sure you make good use of it. Stay active. Limit the time you spend sitting in a chair. Maybe do some gardening. Do some yoga, and add some new hobbies to your life. Expand your horizons.
And don't forget to have fun! Add some fun to each day.
